A white tent, surrounded by big oak trees, in the middle of a farm in Underwood, Iowa made the perfect spot for Jenna & Jonathan to say “I do”.
Making their Wedding Day Unique
Their day was filled to the brim with silly, unique moments and laughter. The bride and her bridesmaids each had tattoos of the groom’s face just to see his reaction, a groomsman did a surprise “first look” with the groom, and the couple didn’t shy away from a cake smashing. Even the ceremony had bits of comedy as the groom pulled out a list of vows a mile long and the father of the bride ‘declined’ to give up his daughter’. The guests laughed and celebrated alongside the couple as the theatrical ceremony played out before them.
But even with all this goofiness, the couple’s pure and intense love for each other shined clearly. Their eyes and stolen glances at each other communicated everything. The couple never stressed about running behind schedule and were so present on their wedding day. They truly soaked up every moment with their dear family and friends.
Being Fully Present on Your Wedding
Both are teachers in the American Sign Language community and a part of the ASL community themselves. The day was filled with moments that celebrated this huge part of their life. All day long you could see guests holding out their hands and signing ‘I love you’ to the couple. Most of their guests were from the ASL community, but those who were not, like myself, still fit right into the crowd. It was clear that everyone there had just one thing on their mind, to be present and celebrate Jenna and Jonathan.
White Tent Wedding Reception
As the day went on and the intimate outdoor ceremony ended, the guests were ushered to a gorgeous white tent for the reception, and a series of speeches and stories and ‘mini plays’ took place, leaving everyone in tears of laughter. The sun was starting to sink and the golden light peeked into the tent. I grabbed the couple and we disappeared for sunset portraits.
It would be easy to think that a communication barrier would make my job as the photographer for this wedding a bit more difficult. However, as soon as I met this couple for their engagement photos, their love was so evident and their bond so strong that taking intimate portraits came easy. They are so connected and in sync with each other that finding small, still, moments becomes natural, and prompting them lets a whole scene of dancing unfold!
Photographing Those in Love
The Scherling wedding was one filled with love and connection. Not only between the bride and groom but between all their guests. Their families and friends formed one big family intently focused on helping Jenna and Jonathan start the next chapter in their lives surrounded by love and laughter.
